Is food FOMO stopping you from starting your slimming journey? You’re not alone. Almost half of 2,000 people surveyed in a new Slimming World survey* said they’ve put off trying to lose weight due to FOMO (fear of missing out) – with having to pass on favourite foods and social events fuelling this fear.
In fact, when it comes to FOMO, more women worry about missing out on their Sunday roast (35%) than going without sex (21%).
At Slimming World, we can definitely help (with the former, anyway – the latter we’ll leave up to you!). As well as roast dinners, the foods that most people feared missing out on were chocolate (29%), takeaways (24%), fish and chips (21%) and fry-ups (18%) – and our generous, flexible Food Optimising plan means you can say yes to all of these and still get the weight loss of your dreams.
Slimming World’s health and research consultant dietitian, Dr Amanda Avery, says: “Food is one of life’s greatest pleasures, so it’s no wonder food FOMO is a very real factor for many of us when it comes to losing weight. Altering deeply ingrained habits around the way we shop, cook and eat can be challenging and that’s where support is crucial.”
The Slimming World difference
Not only do we help our members make satisfying swaps – so that they never have to say no to the food they love – we also go deep into the psychology of slimming, so they can make the mindset changes that will help them lose weight and keep it off.
The survey also polled 1,802 Slimming World members,* and 88% said they enjoy their food as much (or more) than they did before joining. A whopping 91% agreed that it’s possible to lose weight while enjoying your favourite food, too.

“I was stunned to discover that nothing’s off limits at Slimming World. I’m a real foodie and I thought I’d have to miss out to lose weight – I was wrong! I’ve never felt deprived, which makes the plan enjoyable and easy to stick to. I walked down the aisle on my wedding day in a beautiful size-12 dress!”
Dr Avery says: “Being part of a community where you meet other people on the same journey and share ideas, experiences and advice has been shown to help keep motivation high. There’s no need to give up certain foods or miss out on the pleasure they bring you, though – it’s just about finding new ways to prepare and cook the meals you love. Within Slimming World groups, members receive in-depth, expert support, led by a Consultant who’s lost weight on the programme themselves, to reshape the way they think about food and activity.”
