Slimming World founder’s autobiography now available as audiobook
The life story of one of the East Midlands’ most successful businesswomen is now available as an audiobook.
In Wild Women Do (and they don’t regret it), Slimming World founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE, FRSA tells how she founded the company that went on to become the UK and Ireland’s largest weight-management organisation.
The autobiography was first published to mark Slimming World’s 50th anniversary and went on sale to the organisation’s members via its weekly groups and online programme. Now, it has been released in paperback, Kindle edition and as an audiobook read by Margaret. All are available to buy on Amazon.
The book tells how, in 1969, Margaret was 21 and struggling with both her weight and the challenges of life as a single mum. Determined to build a better life for her family and frustrated at the limited weight-loss options available to her at the time, all of which were based on guilt and shame, she conceived Slimming World at her kitchen table in her home in South Normanton.
Remembering how she started, Margaret says: “It occurred to me that maybe the help I so desperately needed didn’t yet exist. Surely there was a better way to help people. I believed every overweight person deserved to be treated as an adult, with respect, kindness and compassion – a conviction that’s just as strong today.”
I believed every overweight person deserved to be treated as an adult, with respect, kindness and compassion – a conviction that’s just as strong today.
The programme she conceived introduced a revolutionary generous, balanced and flexible eating plan based on every day healthy foods, designed to help people lose weight without ever going hungry. It was a practical straightforward plan that worked for everyone, and fitted with normal everyday life, an eating plan that didn't rely on the tedium of weighing, measuring or obsessive counting. Above all, at the heart of the unique programme, was a warm, friendly and powerfully motivating group support system, designed to inspire and encourage slimmers to make positive changes and to develop new healthy habits for life.
The formula was a winning one and today Slimming World is a household name, having helped millions of people to achieve their weight-loss dreams. The revolutionary eating plan and unique support system continues to evolve based on research, insight and applied science to support members with knowledge, confidence and effective tools to manage their weight. It provides thousands of Consultants, who are all self-employed franchises, with rewarding and profitable careers and Slimming World’s online programme supports tens of thousands of members digitally.
In Wild Women Do (and they don’t regret it), named after one of Margaret’s favourite songs by Natalie Cole, Margaret shares her inspiring, heart-warming – and sometimes heart-breaking – story of life, love and Slimming World, taking readers through the highs and lows of building a business on little more than belief, dogged determination and a genuine desire to change members’ health and happiness. It is available on:
Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. Members join local weekly groups or an online programme. Groups are run by a network of community-based Slimming World Consultants across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Consultants are trained in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as recognised behaviour-change techniques. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of energy density and satiety. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly-developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating, encouraging and empowering members to make changes in a supportive, warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
